Alexis Levitin
Alexis Levitin translates works from Portugal, Brazil, and Ecuador. His thirty-four books of translation include Clarice Lispector’s Soulstorm and Eugenio de Andrade’s Forbidden Words, both from New Directions. In 2010, he edited Brazil: A Traveler’s Literary Companion (Whereabouts Press). His most recent books are Blood of the Sun by Brazil’s Salgado Maranhão (Milkweed Editions, 2012), The Art of Patience by Portugal’s Eugenio de Andrade (Red Dragonfly Press, 2013), and Tobacco Dogs by Ecuador’s Ana Minga (The Bitter Oleander Press, 2013). Books forthcoming in 2014 and 2015 include Exemplary Tales by Portugal’s leading woman writer, Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen (Tagus Press), Tiger Fur by Brazil’s Salgado Maranhão (White Pine Press), and Cattle of the Lord by Portugal’s Rosa Alice Branco (Milkweed Editions). He has been focusing especially on Ecuadorian poets in recent years and hopes to introduce more of them to an American public. He has been the recipient of two National Endowment for the Arts Translation Fellowships and is currently on the roster for the Fulbright International Specialist Program. He was a Senior Fulbright Lecturer in Oporto and Coimbra, Portugal in 1980. In addition, he has held translation residencies at Banff, Canada, Straelen, Germany (twice), and the Rockefeller Foundation Study Center in Bellagio, Italy.
